Our next brand is Outerknown, and they have the head covered, along with the rest of you. They are also trying to cover the earth. The brand was founded by surfer Kelly Slater and designer John Moore. Kelly traveled the world and explored every ocean and didn’t like what he was finding, pollution.  During his travels as pro surfer Kelly Slater states, he would come across massive plastic waste and other pollution that are devastating the oceans and the creatures within. The brands mission as Kelly states, “we created Outerknown to smash the formula. To lift the lid on the traditional supply chain and prove you can actually produce great looking menswear in a sustainable way.” The brand set to change how apparel is made and the impact their brand makes on our environment and those who reside in it. They are a company that is transparent; this can be seen in their list of all the ethical businesses used to produce their goods. They are sustainable; they produce garments with ECONYL; a textile made from angler’s nets that would otherwise devastate ocean life and they use recycled plastic from business that obtained it from the ocean. Good Bye Binary

Hiya Folks,

Its 2018 and the lack of essentialism regarding the gender binary has been exposed! Non-binary, gender nonconforming, and gender queer folks exist and they, ze, sie, and hir deserve clothing options that make them feel comfortable in their gender expression.

I would also like to state that folks can wear whatever they please so long as they are in a safe environment that would not put them in a dangerous situation. So, this newfound nonconformity in regards to gender and clothing extends to cisgender and trans folks. Also, nonconforming folks do not HAVE to dress androgynously, again, clothing is about comfort and the gender expression that makes you feel best.

Representation is also a double edged sword. Yes, products and apparel that is non-binary is a revolutionary idea however, this is still tied to capitalism and privileges middle and upperclass folks who have the means to decide what their wardrobe will consist of.

So, however you express your gender identity, the following apparel and accessory brands are viable options for you, I know I’ll definitely be making some purchases.

Generation Z has an increasing population of non-binary folks and is only set to consistently rise. These folks deserve to feel seen and deserve to be catered to as ethically as possible. What many of these brands lacked was an additional emphasis in environmental issues, folks deserve intersectional apparel.

Thank you for your time folks, I can’t wait to see us all dress like this in the future!

A Pop of Art

Hi folks,

Perhaps one of ya’ll could answer the following pressing question:

WHERE IS THE WHIMSY IN FASHION?!

Fashion has recently become a serious, muted and plain wasteland that produces automatons that act, speak, and dress the same. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to see an individual’s personality visually represented?

In this week’s post, we will be presenting you with a few accessories and clothing pieces from local Los Angeles based shops and artists who also happen to make some super cute stuff!

Now, the reason we’re discussing artists on a blog that is closely related to ethical fashion is because of the rampant act of fast fashion companies stealing these artist’s intellectual property and mass producing copies of their work. Since these are small locally based artists, a vast majority of them do not have the means to combat these multimillion dollar companies. Massive companies like Zara and Forever 21 unapologetically steal these designs and hide behind their immense legal team and continue this David VS Goliath narrative.

I hope this realization acts as a not-so-gentle reminder to avoid fast fashion when possible.

What makes this a better option? Move In Silence takes serious subject matters like cholo/a/x culture and police brutality and implements that into their art.

Only you can help assist in this David VS Goliath narrative. You can make the choice to buy another low quality t-shirt or stolen enamel pin from Zara or, you can put your money in the hands of folks who are here to deliver substance.

I do acknowledge that for a lot of folks, the price of these goods from fast fashion companies may be a major influence in why folks have to shop from said companies. I place the task of avoiding immoral fast fashion upon folks who have the financial stability to do so.

So, buy something cute, creative, and whimsical! Refuse becoming an automaton!

Have a remarkable day!

The good, the bad, and the ugly side of fashion

Fashion is not only about looking good, it is also about feeling good and doing good. It is safe to say that every one of you readers knows how important our earth is. Well it is just as important to think about those other people who populate our earth too. What does this have to do with fashion you may be asking yourself, well everything.

Before we begin, allow me to introduce, or remind you, of some words becoming synonymous with fashion: ethical, sustainable, and transparency.

Now, let me let you in on a few dirty little secrets about the fashion industry. The first is, fashion is hard on our earth (a.k.a environment). Just Google how much water it takes to make a pair of jeans for example and you will see that most results state it takes approximately 1,800 gallons of water to produce or one pair of jeans, ONE PAIR! I hope that has you thinking what you could do to make a difference. Hold that thought.

The second dirty little, not so secret is, the fashion industry can at times be harsh for people. It can make a person feel excluded and even insecure about how they look or who they are. Well my friends, we are here to let you know that is the fashion of yesterday. Today consumers can shop for products that are, size inclusive and genderless, with businesses that are sustainable, ethical, and transparent. Before we get to the good stuff, there is one more thing for you to think about when making your next purchase.

And that is the dirty little secret that lies within the making of the products; it is the unfair treatment of those workers. Many manufacturing countries have unfair business practices and unfair treatment of the workers. These unfair practices and treatment can include unfair wages (below poverty level), unpaid labor, child labor, and poor treatment of the workers.

While we as consumers are at the mercy of the retailer, we can make a conscious effort on where we buy our products. A little extra effort when shopping for clothes using those words I told you about, will direct you to amazing businesses doing amazing things to make a difference. Why wait, continue reading on and you will find some of the legwork already done for you!

Bead & Reel

Why lead with Bead & Reel you may ask yourself. Well this company promotes everything our blog wants to promote and encourage. That is not to say not all of the other brands we will mention don’t, because they are as equally amazing, it is my opinion Bead & Reel is just a good introductory.  They are female founded vegan company who is transparent in who they are, how they operate, what they stand for, and do an amazing job of educating consumers how they can make an impact. When you have time I recommend reading their ethics page. In the meantime I will sum it up, they practice fair trade (worldwide where possible), they believe in gender equality (“that any man or woman should feel comfortable wearing anything they wish”) and offer options “that are neither masculine no feminine and could be worn easily by either gender”, they give back to causes that make impact to environment as well for those people in it, they use organic and vegan product, they recycle, and they upcycle, plus they do more! Enough about them check out the product.

The Tea On The Tee

Hi folks!

I think most folks would agree that a t-shirt is a vital component of a wardrobe.  Whether you’re heading over to Target to “accidentally” run into a cute cashier or you’re heading out to have Korean BBQ, chances are you’re probably wearing a t-shirt.

T-shirts also blur aesthetic boundaries and lend themselves to whatever someone’s personal style may be. Punks, Minimalists, and Greasers can all wear a t-shirt with drastically different interpretations. So, if t-shirts are so versatile and common, why aren’t there more ethical options?

That’s where we come in. We’re going to be showing you a few different options that are a bit more conscious than your typical t-shirt. These t-shirts will vary in what makes them better options. So whether you put that cute cashier’s number in your front pocket or you rub out that kimchi stain, there is bound to be a t-shirt in this list for you to do that in.
